Navigating Your Job Search: A Strategic Guide

Finding a new job can feel like a job in itself – and that's exactly the mindset to adopt! Approach your job search with the same dedication and enthusiasm you would bring to any new role. Here are some actionable tips to guide you through the process:

1. Embrace Your New "Job": Finding Employment

Even if you're currently unemployed, recognize that your primary focus is now securing gainful employment. Bring energy and purpose to this new endeavor each day.

2. Leverage Your Network: Tap into Your Connections

Your existing network is a valuable resource. Remember that each person you know likely has connections of their own. Reach out to family, friends, former colleagues, and classmates. Explain that you're seeking new opportunities and ask if they know of any openings or individuals who might be helpful to connect with for an informational coffee meeting.

Special Note:

If you are new to Canada, or to your locale, you have an extra challenge, as your network is small. Expand it by going to meetings that anyone can attend. Search for special interest groups, associations, or if you have a hobby, join a club to get to

know people with similar interests. If you are a person of faith, church breakfasts and potlucks are also great places to meet people.

Put your children into sports and get to know their team mates and their parents. Ask your children to invite their friends over for a movie night.

These recommendations are accessible to everyone and create opportunities for new connections and friendships.

3. Master the Coffee Meeting: Networking for Opportunities

The goal of these informal meetings is twofold: to uncover potential job leads and to gain introductions to people who may be hiring within your field or companies of interest.

4. Set Clear Job Search Goals: Measure Your Progress

Establish specific, measurable goals to stay focused and track your efforts. Consider incorporating the following into your weekly routine:

  • Resume' Outreach: Send your resume to at least 10 new contacts or relevant job postings.

  • Networking Meetings: Schedule and conduct 5 informational coffee meetings.

  • LinkedIn Engagement: Connect with 5 new professionals in your target industries or roles.

  • Follow-Up Strategy: Follow up with a phone call within two business days of submitting each resume.

5. Manage Stress During Unemployment: Prioritize Well-being

Navigating unemployment can be challenging. Here are some strategies to manage stress effectively:

  • Cultivate Supportive Relationships: Be patient and understanding with your loved ones. Their support is crucial during this time.

  • Limit Negative Input: Minimize exposure to negative news cycles and overly dramatic television programs.

  • Seek Uplifting Content: Engage with comedies and inspiring stories of successful individuals. Platforms like YouTube offer a wealth of such content (e.g., Just for Laughs).

  • Prioritize Physical Activity: Aim for 20 minutes of exercise 3-4 times per week. This could be as simple as a brisk walk.

6. Build Your Network Actively: Expand Your Reach

Proactively grow your professional circle:

  • Schedule Networking Coffees: Meet with everyone in your existing network. Clearly communicate that you are seeking employment and specifically ask for helpful contacts. Aim to leave each meeting with at least two new connections.

  • Make Job Searching a Daily Priority: Treat your job search like a full-time job. Establish a routine: wake up, get ready, check emails, and aim to be out for networking meetings by mid-morning.

  • Get your resume online: This is a whole other blog, topic, post your resume on Indeed and set up alerts for jobs and employers that suit your qualifications.

7. Project Professionalism: Dress for Success

Your appearance makes a strong first impression:

  • Dress Professionally for Meetings: Wear your best, freshly cleaned, and ironed work attire to every coffee meeting. Consider investing in a new outfit that boosts your confidence.

  • Maintain Excellent Personal Hygiene: Ensure you are freshly showered (shave if applicable), have a neat haircut, brushed teeth, and use fresh breath mints or gum (discarding it before your meeting). Go light on the scents and perfumes, some people are allergic, or it can be distracting.

  • Do a Final Check: Before each meeting, take a moment to look in a mirror to ensure everything is in order.

8. Expand Your Connections Beyond Your Existing Network:

Explore new avenues for building relationships:

  • Attend Meetups: Visit www.meetup.com and find groups aligned with your interests or industry. Attend meetings and consider volunteering at registration as a way to meet more people.

  • Volunteer Strategically: Offer your skills to a non-profit organization. This can provide valuable experience, networking opportunities, and a potential letter of reference from a senior figure. Organizing a fundraising event is an excellent way to connect with influential individuals.

9. Optimize Your Resume: Make it Stand Out

Your resume is a key marketing tool:

  • Highlight Your Target Role: Clearly display your desired job title prominently at the top of your resume, for example:

Joe Smith

Intranet Project Manager

  • Maximize Visibility: Post your resume on all relevant job boards.

  • Stay Informed: Follow companies you are interested in working for on professional platforms to receive job alerts.

We wish you the best in your job search! Please feel free to reach out with any updates on your progress.

If you do half of what is listed in this blog, you will be miles ahead of the competition, and you be more likely to get the job of your dreams.

happy workers
